I keep hearing talk about how this year’s draft (which starts tomorrow) is insignificant because it is not one that is full of quarterbacks. If you ask me, that is exactly why it is significant.
Why is this draft important? Because of the simple fact that it is not a draft full of outstanding quarterbacks. The NFL, in its current state, is full of outstanding quarterbacks. This can be proven by simply trying to pick the top five in the league. I for one have trouble picking just five. You have Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, Drew Brees, and Aaron Rogers. Right there is six QB’s that have combined for 10 Super Bowls. Not only that but Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Ben Roethlisberger have combined for an extra four appearances. This is just a start.
We can then shift focus to those QB’s that are good but I wouldn’t call “elite”. This includes guys like Phillip Rivers, Tony Romo, Jay Cutler, Joe Flacco, Cam Newton, Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick, and Matt Ryan. These are the QB’s that I believe are good enough (and may have already) taken their teams to the Super Bowl. Pardon me for missing a guy or two.
Lastly, you have the most recent draft class of QB’s that will be starting their second seasons. This includes guys like Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill, Andrew Luck, and Russel Wilson. These guys all look very promising for their respective teams and are just getting started.
I haven’t even mentioned guys like Brandon Weeden, Christian Ponder, Matt Shaub, Mike Vick, and Mathew Stafford. In this post, I believe I mentioned 23 different quarterbacks, each of which seem to be decent or better. I likely even missed a few names. What does this tell us though? The league is full of QB’s.
So where does that leave us? This leaves us with a draft that is full of teams looking for great players to stop all these great passers. Make no mistake, the NFL has become a league centered on the passing game. This is a great reason as to why the league is stacked in that area right now.
This draft is important because teams can concentrate on other areas that are in need of attention. With few, if any QB’s being taken in the first round this year, there is more room for RB’s, CB’s, and WR’s. I don’t really have to tell you that, but I want to make my point clear. This draft IS NOT INSIGNIFICANT. Perhaps with all this talent, we will see an even more competitive and skilled league than we are already used to.
